Brake Safety Week is now in full swing, with enforcement teams across Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. diligently collecting comprehensive data related to brake inspections from August 20 to 26.
This year’s emphasis is on both general brake system assessments and specific data concerning brake linings and pads.
Inspection reports will encompass various details, including the identification of cracks, voids, wear, or contamination in brake linings and pads.
It’s noteworthy that certain brake lining and pad issues, while not leading to immediate out-of-service violations, can still impact carrier safety ratings, as highlighted by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA).
During last year’s Brake Safety Week, Canada’s commercial vehicle inspectors meticulously examined 1,975 vehicles, resulting in 17.8% being placed out of service due to brake-related infractions. This exceeded the North American average of 13.3%.
Vehicles successfully passing Level 1 or Level 5 inspections will qualify for a CVSA decal, valid for up to three months, serving as evidence that the equipment has undergone recent and thorough inspection.
